Corona affiliate seeks mining permit

An Irish company partially owned by Vancouver-based Corona (TSE) has applied for permission to build a lead-zinc mine near Galmoy, County Kilkenny, Ireland. At a capital cost of about $102 million, Conroy Mines, a unit of Conroy Petroleum and Natural Resources, hopes to mine the high- grade zinc ore from two main zones lying between 60 metres and 100 metres.

Corona owns a 27.6% indirect stake in Conroy Petroleum through its Irish subsidiary Lemington and through its associate Noramco Mining (TSE).

The Conroy deposit hosts probable reserves of 7 million tonnes grading 11% zinc and 1% lead, and is expected to produce 135,000 tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates per year, beginning in 1992.

Conroy’s planning application includes construction of a 13 degrees decline between the deposit’s two main orebodies.
