So, if PCBs are news, where are the headlines about Falconbridge’s latest PCB “situation”?
There are probably no headlines because the news isn’t confrontational enough. In fact, this is a good news story, and they seldom make for good headlines.
In this story, Falconbridge plans to spend $600,000 in what the company says is probably the largest clean-up of its kind in Canada. Its Kidd Creek division in Timmins, Ont., hopes to get approval from the provincial government by mid-June to treat 280,000 litres of PCB contaminated mineral oil and effectively render it harmless.
That’s the kind of industry initiative that just doesn’t fit the stereotype of a big, bad mining company ruining the environment. There’s no potential for any David-and-Goliath conflict. Hence, there are no headl ines.
Now if there’s a spill while the project is under way, watch out. That would be a story.
