Opening shots for the big new development program at the Macassa mine, in Kirkland Lake, Ont., were fired this week. Sinking operations began Monday on the new 4,000-ft shaft, in the centre of the property, about 700 ft west of the No. 1 opening. The new shaft is of 3-compartment size and will be similarly equipped to No. 1. The immediate objective is 1,000 ft. where the first level will be established, with stations to be cut at 500-ft intervals below that level.
