Venture quiet in run-up to Easter, April 14-17

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index was quiet during the four-day week before Easter. Two days of small gains overturned two days in the red, lifting the index 1 point to 998.77. Daily trading volumes averaged 66.8 million.

The list of volume leaders shows how quiet the Venture was over the pre-Easter week. Of the top-10 most traded stocks, six released no news, two are former mineral explorers now entering the marijuana sector and nine out of 10 are worth less than 10¢.

It was not the best week for Kennady Diamonds, which lost 76¢ in four days to close at $4.33, despite promising exploration results. Drills at the company’s Kennady North project in the Northwest Territories intersected kimberlite in 17 of 18 holes in and around the Kelvin zone, including an 80-metre intercept from north of the known resource. The first hole to test the Faraday 2 geophysical target returned 23 metres of kimberlite.

It was also a poor week for Anfield Nickel. The company outlined its struggles in advancing production at its Mayaniquel nickel laterite project in Guatemala, including many codependent but slow permitting and licencing processes, a proposal from the Guatemalan government to enact a moratorium on new licences pending reforms to the country’s mining law and the need for new capital in a market with difficult financing. ANF shares fell 46¢ on the news to close at 96¢ — their lowest level in five years.

Fission Uranium released more exploration news from its Patterson Lake South project in the southeastern Athabasca basin. The latest results included 12 holes that hit uranium mineralization, highlighted by 41 metres of 0.92% uranium oxide (U3O8), 8 metres of 4.03% U3O8 and 5.5 metres of 2.41% U3O8. Fission’s latest drill program has returned uranium in every hole but the company’s share price has slid 15% since April, likely because of a weaker uranium price and a pullback after two months of gains. FCU shares ended the week down 8¢ at $1.40.

A $2.1-million financing has given Transition Metals capital to keep growing its early stage exploration projects. Investors oversubscribed the offering, prompting a boost to $2.07 million from $1.7 million. The company sold 6.9 million units at 30¢ apiece. Each unit comprised a share and a warrant exercisable at 40¢ for two years.

Athabasca Minerals added another 15¢ to its share price, ending the week at $1.92. Athabasca explores for and develops aggregates and industrial minerals in Alberta, where oil sands operators and developers make up most of the company’s client base. In mid-2013 ABM shares were worth 75¢, which means they have gained 156% in nine months.
