Continued support for the uranium industry depends on the public’s belief that the sector is committed to strict environmental protection standards, Saskatchewan’s environment minister said recently in London, England.
Berny Wiens, who was addressing the 19th annual symposium of The Uranium Institute, said the public also expects the industry to live by tough worker health and safety controls.
Uranium mining and exploration in the province provide direct employment for 1,500 persons and another 2,800 persons indirectly, Wiens said. The industry spends about $186 million on goods and services and contributes $30 million in taxes and royalties to the province each year.
