Quebec’s ministry of natural resources projects that the improvement in world economic conditions should boost the price of raw materials in 1995, allowing mineral producers in the province to step up the value of their shipments.
Preliminary data for 1994 indicate that the value of Quebec’s mineral shipments increased by about 5% from the previous year. The total was slightly more than $2.8 billion.
Silver shipments rose 23%, gold shipments increased 11% and zinc shipments were ahead 15%. Copper shipments were lower, but the value of the shipments rose slightly because of the appreciated price of the metal. The volume and value of asbestos shipments were practically unchanged.
Total investment in the province’s mineral industry in 1994 was $800 million, up 15% from the previous year. The ministry reports that of that total, exploration expenditures amounted to $136 million, an increase of 22% from 1993.
