OBITUARY Marcel Konings

Marcel Konings, Holland-born geophysicist, died recently in a car accident in Zimbabwe. He was 39. Holder of a B.A.Sc. degree from the University of Toronto, Konings specialized in geological engineering and mineral exploration.

He served as project geologist for AMOCO Canada Petroleum, 1974-75, and was part of the team responsible for the discovery of the Detour Lake gold mine in Ontario, now mined by Placer Dome.

As a staff geologist for Shell Canada Resources, 1976-80, Konings was involved in the geophysical delineation of the East Kemptville tin deposit in Nova Scotia. As well, he contributed to the discovery of the BP Cabacal gold mine in Brazil when he was chief geophysicist for Questor Surveys, 1980-87.

Since 1987, Konings had been proprietor-engineer for Ontario-based Stratigraphic Research.
