One of the two Highmont mills has already been started succesfully and the second is to be operational by mid-May.
The addition of the two mills will bring the total rated daily milling capacity of the expanded milling complex to 131,000 tonnes per day from the current rate of 120,000 tonnes per day.
The older Bethlehem mill will be shut down as soon as the expansion phase becomes fully operational at the end of June this year. The shut down will put 100 people out of work.
Highland Valley Copper is a partnership formed in 1986 to combine the copper and molybdenum mining and milling assets of Cominco Ltd. (TSE) and Lornex Mining. At the end of 1988, Lornex’s share in the project was changed to a direct participation in the partnership by Rio Algom (TSE) and by Teck Corp. (TSE), both of which held sizeable positions in the company.
The resulting shares in the cash flow of the Highland Valley partnership are 50% for Cominco, 33.5% for Rio Algom, 11.5% for Teck and 5% for Highmont Mining.
