Komatsu-Cummins fires up its 500,000th engine

The Komatsu-Cummins Engine Company (KCEC) recently has announced the production of its 500,000th engine at its plant in Oyama, Japan.

The joint-venture company was established between Tokyo-based construction equipment manufacturers Komatsu Ltd. and Columbus, Ind.-based engine designer Cummins Inc. in 1993 at Oyama.

“Reaching the half-million engine mark represents another significant achievement in the long-established partnership between Komatsu and Cummins, which is widely regarded as the most successful and enduring in the off-highway industry,” said Eric Neal, general manager of Cummins-Komatsu Business Worldwide, in a press release.

KCEC also used the opportunity to highlight its release of the next generation of Tier 4 low-emissions engines, to be used in mining and construction equipment.

The plant is recognized for its low emission manufacturing techniques.

In April 2001, the KCEC plant at Oyama became the first construction equipment plant in Japan to be applauded for achieving zero emissions.
