Kennecott finds NWT pipe

Kennecott Canada Exploration has found a new kimberlite pipe on a block of ground contiguous with the southern boundary of the Ekati diamond mine in the Northwest Territories.

The kimberlite, dubbed EG-5, was found in shallow water about 75 metres from the southern shore of Lac de Gras.

So far, two shallow holes have been drilled, both of which were abandoned in kimberlite as a result of caving. The kimberlite consists of volcaniclastic material.

Core samples will be analyzed at Kennecott’s lab in Thunder Bay, Ont., for microdiamonds and heavy mineral indicator chemistry.

The Lac de Gras block is held 60% by Kennecott, a division of Rio Tinto (RTP-N), and 40% by SouthernEra Resources (SUF-T).
