With a mining engineering degree from the U.K., Hymas joined the Falconbridge organization in Canada in 1953. He subsequently worked at a number of other mining operations in this country, including the Lake Shore, Kerr Addison, Pamour and Rio Algom in Ontario, Craigmont in B.C. and with the firm of Ditchburn and Associates (Molycorp) in New Mexico. He joined Teck Corp. in 1965.
