Harmony resumes mining after day of violence

Two miners and a security guard have been injured in a violent outbreak at Harmony Gold Mining’s Kalgold mine in northeastern South Africa.

Striking miners allegedly attacked the mine’s security personnel after guards tried to disperse them using rubber bullets and tear gas. The injured were treated and released from hospital, and the security company was replaced.

About 250 members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at Kalgold have been on strike for three weeks over pay and employee benefits.

Meanwhile, at Harmony’s Randfontein mine, parties have yet to resolve an impasse over the living allowance.

The NUM proposed a revised living allowance of R700 (less than half its original demand) and an agreement to build housing for families so that single-sex hostels could be abolished.

Harmony countered with R420 a month.

The strike by 5,000 NUM members at Randfontein is costing the company R2 million a day in lost production. The union and management have agreed to continue mediation.
