Fractures in the shaft at the Golden Giant mine near Marathon, Ont., were surficial only, and owner Hemlo Gold Mines was expected to have resumed underground operations by presstime. The fracturing, at 700 metres below surface, was detected by monitoring instruments. Hemlo ceased production and brought in three consulting groups to examine the area. After drill testing of the fractured rock, the consultants found the wall rock to be sound, and recommended rock bolting, screening and timbering the fractured part of the wall.
