General News & Comment Student wins prize

A student at McGill University, Montreal, has become the first mining engineering student to win the Prix d’Excellence of the Order of Engineers of Quebec.

Brigitte Lacouture will graduate in June. The prize, which includes a check for $1,000, is awarded annually by the Order of Engineers to one student at each of seven Quebec universities where engineering is taught.

Ms Lacouture has had practical experience already in the mining field, having worked for Sigma Mines in Val d’Or in the summer of 1985 and the Chadbourne division of Noranda Inc. in Rouyn in the summer of last year. She intends to continue her studies at the Julius Kruttschnitt Research Centre in Brisbane, Australia.
