Belmoral facing another trial over 1980 cave-in

The company was acquitted in a 1982 trial of all charges of criminal negligence relating to the May, 1980, cave-in in which several miners died. The Quebec Court of Appeal set aside the 1982 verdict and in 1986 ordered a new trial. Belmoral then appealed the 1986 ruling to the Supreme Court of Canada.

A date for a new trial has not been set.

The company believes that if the new trial proceeds and the company is found liable, its penalty would likely be in the form of a fine, the amount to be set by the trial court.
