TSX Venture closes in the red, Sept. 15-19

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite hit a four-week low during the trading period, losing 32.8 points before finishing the week at 955.06 points. Commodity futures struggled, with precious and base-metal contracts on the decline. Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve said it would keep interest rates near zero over the mid-term, and Scotland voted to stay part of the U.K. in a historic decision.

Gold futures hit a seven-month low after December contracts for bullion dropped US$12.30 before closing at US$1,216.60 per oz. November contracts for West Texas Intermediate crude oil jumped 1.8%, or US$1.59, en route to a US$91.65-per-barrel close. December contracts for copper traded relatively flat before finishing at US$3.09 per lb.

Explorer Kennady Diamonds led the value-added category after releasing drill results from its Kennady North diamond project in the Northwest Territories, as well as opening a non-brokered private placement. The company gained 18¢ before closing at $7.60 per share.

On Sept. 15 Kennady said more than 215 metres of kimberlite had been intersected in drill hole 14-55 from 158 metres deep. The company’s drilling delineated the Kelvin kimberlite to the north beyond the current geological model. Kennady will chase Kelvin farther north with another three holes.

The company is arranging a $5-million private placement, wherein it will price the offering at $6.50 per share. Kennady’s major shareholder — Bottin International Investments — is reportedly subscribing for 538,000 shares, for gross proceeds of $3.5 million.

Junior Newstrike Capital had a strong week after announcing a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its Ana Paula gold project in Mexico’s emerging Guerrero gold belt. Shares jumped 13¢ on 571,760  traded, before closing out the period at $1.10.

Newstrike’s PEA models a US$164-million conventional open-pit operation, which would include a gravity flotation and carbon-in-leach processing circuit at 6,000 tonnes per day. Average annual production at Ana Paula would be 116,000 oz. gold and 239,000 oz. silver at cash costs of US$486 per oz., net of by-product credits. Assuming US$1,300 per oz. gold, Ana Paula features a US$232-million after-tax net present value at a 5% discount rate, along with a 32.8% internal rate of return and 2.4-year payback.

Graphite One Resources topped the volumes traded, with 8.8 million of its shares changing hands. On Sept. 16 Graphite One reported it would increase the second tranche of a non-brokered private placement, which brings the gross raise to $5 million.
