The 2011 PDAC awards gala was held during the organization’s annual convention, on the evening of March 7 at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York hotel. The winners were selected by the PDAC’s board of directors, based on recommendations from the awards committee.
Prospector Shawn Ryan won the Bill Dennis award for a Canadian discovery or prospecting success for his significant gold discoveries in the Yukon which have led a spike in exploration in the territory.
Iamgold (IMG-T, IAG-N) took home the Environmental & Social Responsibility award for displaying excellence in environmental stewardship, community engagement, and health and safety, particularly during exploration.
The Distinguished Service award went to Patricia Dillon for her contributions to the PDAC and to the Canadian mineral industry, specifically for her work on education and human resources initiatives.
Phillip (Jerry) Asp received the Skookum Jim award for aboriginal achievement in the mineral industry for his work promoting mining’s benefits to aboriginal communities in British Columbia.
Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM-T, AEM-N) accepted the Viola R. MacMillan award for company or mine development for its successful and ambitious four-year mine-building program which transformed the company, creating exceptional value for shareholders, employees and host communities.
Anglo American‘s (AAL-L) exploration team won the Thayer Lindsley award for an international mineral discovery for its discovery of the world-class Los Sulfatos copper deposit in Chile.
Chile’s Minister of Mining Laurence Golborne received the Special Achievement award for his management of the rescue operation that saved 33 miners who had been trapped underground for 69 days in the San Jose copper-gold mine.
