SGS VP Awarded Canadian Mineral Processor Of The Year

Chris Fleming, VP of metallurgy at SGS Mineral Services, has been awarded the Canadian Mineral Processor of the Year by the Metallurgical Society of CIM (MetSoc).

Fleming was given the award at the 42nd annual Canadian Mineral Processors Operators Conference in January in Ottawa.

The award is given to members of MetSoc who have contributed significantly to metallurgy in Canada. This is the fifth award Fleming has received from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) throughout his 36-year career.

Fleming is widely revered in the industry for his work on commercialization of the carbon-in-pulp and resin-in-pulp processes in gold extraction and his development of the Augment, Hannah, Sart and Platsol processes.

In addition to the Processor of the Year award, he has received the Sherritt Hydrometallurgy award (1997), the CIM Distinguished Lecturer award (1997/98), the CIM Fellowship award (2004), and the Airey award (2009).

Fleming, who graduated from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, spent 16 years working in hydrometallurgical research and development for Mintek, before moving his family to Canada in 1990 to work for Lakefield Research.

Fleming has authored 82 technical publications, been awarded 15 patents, and contributed to several books about extractive metallurgy.
