TSX Venture Exchange -Jan. 26-Feb. 1

The TSX Venture Exchange index fell 2.4%, or 36.91 points, over the Jan. 26-Feb. 1 trading period to 1,509.94 points.

Within the index there were 50 stocks that reached new 52-week highs while 31 companies watched their share price fall to new lows.

Explor Resources shares increased a substantial 42%, or 36¢, to close at $1.21 a piece over the period on no recent news. Earlier in January, the company closed the second tranche of a $7-million private placement set at 55¢ per unit with each unit consisting of one share and half a warrant. The company focused on gold and base metals exploration in the Abitibi greenstone belt in Ontario and Quebec, but also has projects in Saskatchewan.

Hana Mining reached a new 52-week high, rising to $1.90 on no immediate news. The company announced on Jan. 21 plans to spin out its Kuke property in Botswana to create a base metals subsidiary named New Hana Copper Mining. The transaction won’t directly affect shareholders. Hana is also exploring the Ghanzi copper-silver project in Botswana. The company hopes the new corporate structure will allow for accelerated exploration of Kuke, a 10,654 sq. km area outside of the Ghanzi district where no work has been done yet.

Noront Resources shares fell 23¢ to $1.58 over the period. First Nations groups have blocked Noront and other companies in the area from doing any exploration work in the very isolated McFaulds Lake or Ring of Fire camp in Ontario’s James Bay Lowlands. The protestors are not allowing aircraft to land on two key ice landing strips, causing a logistics halt. Noront says it supports the First Nations plight and is sitting tight hoping to find a solution so it can get back to work soon. The groups have a long list of issues, including lack of consultation by operators in the area and the location of a proposed rail corridor by KWG Resources. KWG wants to develop the Big Daddy chrome deposit in the Ring of Fire with partner Cliffs Natural Resources. The proposed rail corridor, which would include service roads, would not go through the local First Nations settlements. Community members are upset because they’ve been planning to build a road to connect several isolated communities for the last 10 years.

Maudore Minerals was the top loser over the period. Shares fell 55¢ to $3.15 apiece on no recent news. In early January, the company announced drill results from its Comtois project near Lebel-sur-Quvillon, Que. Highlights from the Osbell Midway zone include 3 metres grading 14.5 grams gold per tonne. These intercepts, extending as deep as 465 metres, are the deepest high-grade results from the Midway zone so far.
