Aker Kvaerner to relocate, expand technology shop

Norwegian engineering powerhouse Aker Kvaerner has announced plans to relocate the company’s fabrication shop to Pickering, Ont.

Aker Kvaerner Chemetics facility, established in 1961 in Toronto, focuses on specialized welding, stainless steel and high alloy fabrication.

Relocation of the state-of-the-art shop — a $17.7-million investment for Aker Kvaerner — will allow the company to expand the facility and increase business. The expansion will allow more space for work zones and installation of in-house waste management solutions.

“Construction of the facility will allow us to capitalize on the market’s demand for shell and tube fabrication by more than doubling our production capacity in Toronto,” said Bob Vanderland, president of Aker Kvaerner’s Toronto facility.

Vanderland also expects employment to increase 40% by the end of 2009.
