Toronto Stock Exchange Jan. 8-14

With the looming threat of a slowdown south of the border, the TSX Composite Index recovered from a dip early in the trading period Jan. 8-14, gaining 80 points to finish at 13,698.28.

The Capped Metals and Mining Index was up 16.34 points to 752.82 as metals prices remained strong. Of those, spot lead got a US40 boost to US$1.62 per lb., aluminum rose by a penny to US$1.13 per lb., copper continued its recent recovery, up about US3 to US$3.31 per lb., though nickel fell about US35 to US$13.05 per lb.

Meanwhile, the Global Gold Index increased by 36.58 points to 377.01 , as the price of gold jumped nearly 5%, or US$42.75, to US$902 per oz.

Yamana Gold was the most actively traded stock over the period, rising by $2.88 to $17.25 per share on nearly 76 million shares traded. The gold company provided its operating outlook for the next two years, projecting it would produce 1.3 million oz. gold this year and 1.6 million oz. gold in 2009, up from 933,000 oz. during 2007.

Other active stocks included Kinross Gold, up $3.45 to $23.86 on almost 45 million shares traded, and Eastern Platinum, which rose 35 to $3.05, on similar trading volumes.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan led the period for highest value change, up $12.72 to $152.86 per share. Potash Corp., the world’s biggest fertilizer producer, has watched its share price soar more than 30% over the last three months and 60% in the past six months.

Major Drilling Group International was the top loser based on value change over the session. The Moncton, N.B.-based company saw shares fall $3.70 to $60.55 on a trading volume of 1.1 million shares.

Carpathian Gold shares climbed nearly 31% to 55 apiece. Carpathian released a summary of its 2007 results from its exploration program in Romania, which included a National Instrument 43-101 resource estimate on its Rovina cold-copper licence. The property has an indicated resource of 68 million tonnes grading 0.64 gram gold per tonne and 0.12% copper for 1.41 million oz. gold and 175 million lbs. copper. In the inferred category, the project has 160 million tonnes grading 0.33 gram gold and 0.24% copper for 1.7 million oz. gold and 849 million lbs. copper.

TVI Pacific resumed trading on the TSX after a cease-trade order in October. The company had failed to meet a deadline to file financial restatements for the first quarter of 2007 and fiscal 2005 and 2006. TVI, which has gold and base metals operations in Asia, announced in August that it needed to file the financial restatements. Shares fell 34% over the period to 9.5 per share.
