New Horizons: By the book

The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) has published Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility: Tools, codes and standards for the mineral exploration industry.

The 20-page document — available in hardcopy and PDF formats — lists the resources that have been produced over the last 25 years by various organizations and associations in the areas of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

“There are resources available that have been developed by various organizations and associations and that discuss, analyze and offer guidance on various aspects of CSR. The PDAC decided to draw these resources together as a service to its members and to the industry generally,” says PDAC president Patricia Dillon.

The PDAC says companies seeking to develop or improve their management practices in CSR are often left to their own devices as there are no internationally recognized standards.

The 36 resources contained in the new publication are divided into three separate categories. The first lists and summarizes those resources developed specifically for mineral exploration. These include checklists and guides that are largely pragmatic in nature.

The second section includes codes, standards and guidelines generated by international organizations and that can be applied to the private sector. The last category lists background documents that represent the evolution of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility and provide a context for these topics.

The contents and objectives of each resource are briefly summarized and information is given on how each may be obtained.

The publication can be downloaded free of charge from the PDAC’s website at www.pdac.ca. Hard copies of the publication will be mailed to PDAC members.

Non-members can request copies from Teresa Barrett at tbarrett@pdac.ca.
