Rio Tinto (RTP-N) chief executive Leigh Clifford was appointed chair of the International Council on Mining & Metals ICMM. He succeeds Newmont Mining CEO Wayne Murdy.
Clifford has served on the ICMM Council for three years. BHP Billiton (BHP-N) CEO Chip Goodyear will serve as vice-chair.
Clifford’s first duty in his new role was to welcome two new members to ICMM. The addition of CVRD (RIO-N) and Teck Cominco (TCK.B-T, TCK-N) means that 15 of the industry’s most significant mining and metals companies are committed to implementing ICMM’s Sustainable Development Framework.
“ICMM has a vital role in raising the industry’s sustainable development performance,” Clifford says. “Our members have a collective view that long-term business success is based on an integrated approach to economic, social and environmental management and effective corporate governance.”
