Roundup Rockhounds (November 14, 2005)

In co-operation with the B.C. & Yukon Chamber of Mines (BCYCM), the Mineral Resources Education Program of B.C. will once again be involving elementary and secondary students and their teachers in Mineral Exploration Roundup 2006. We are expecting more than 120 students to attend Roundup 2006 as special delegates after working on mineral resources units with their teachers this preceding fall. While attending Roundup, the students will participate in a full day of learning including a Trade Show treasure hunt, gold panning with Yukon Dan, listening to exploration geologists speak about their exciting work, and talking with delegates and exhibitors to learn about the variety of careers and opportunities available in the mineral exploration and mining sector.

In addition to the students attending the conference, the Mineral Resources Education Program of B.C. will also bring student artwork to showcase as the centrepieces at the BCYCM Awards Night. There will also be a silent auction during the reception and dinner to raise funds for the program, which is a charitable organization.

The Mineral Resources Education Program of B.C. is a partnership between classroom teachers and the mineral industry in British Columbia. The partnership has existed since 1991. The focus of this partnership is to support classroom teachers with the development of practical and usable teacher resources. Thanks to a team of creative and enthusiastic teachers, and a unique educational opportunity offered through the Mining Association of British Columbia, minerals, mining and geoscience resources were developed. The program is teacher-driven and all classroom resources are teacher-written. All aspects of development are supported by contributions to the program.
