Detailed engineering and environmental studies for the proposed road into the resource-rich Iskut River region of northwestern British Columbia are now in progress. Earlier this year British Columbia Premier Bill Vander Zalm announced the go-ahead for the road which will run from Bob Quinn on Highway 37 to Bronson Creek. It will access the Johnny Mountain, Snip and Eskay Creek mineral properties.
Klohn Leonoff was awarded the $850,000 contract for the studies. The Richmond-based consulting firm has already placed field crews at the Bronson and Bob Quinn airstrips with additional support staff located in Smithers. The crews will carry out comprehensive surveying, soil testing, water quality, fisheries, wildlife and heritage/archaeology work.
Costs for the studies will be shared equally by the B.C. government, Prime Resources Group and Cominco. The program will continue until mid-October.
Klohn Leonoff will then prepare detailed plans, profiles and construction specifications by year-end. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1991 and the 92-kilometre road should be completed by fall.
