Arsenic levels curb Inco refinery output

Higher than acceptable levels of arsenic were encountered in ore being extracted in the final stages of the Thompson open pit mine’s life. Inco says all of the arsenic cannot be removed in the nickel refinery, affecting the quality of the product.

The shortfall will represent about 20% of Inco’s monthly electrolytic nickel production, or about four million lb in the remainder of the second quarter. The impact on production beyond the second quarter has not been determined.

Principal customers of Inco’s electrolytic nickel are the plating industry in the United States and Europe and to a lesser extent the melting industry.
