Letter to the editor: TNM ‘dismissive’ of global warming

I am amazed that The Northern Miner continues to be adamantly dismissive of the concept of global warming as shown in several recent editorials.

Publications as varied as the Manchester-based Guardian Weekly and Engineering Dimensions, published in Toronto by the Professional Engineers of Ontario, agree that scientific evidence of climate change is mounting. Extreme weather events and adverse health effects can be expected unless measures are taken to reverse the warming trend.

I believe that it is now too late to reverse this trend. The momentum that we have created to continue our growth-driven economies is just too massive to stop. Perhaps, at best, it could be slowed down. This will be the first human-driven climate change in the history of the planet.

Just remember that in less than two hundred years we have burned up more than half the planet’s coal, oil and gas — natural resources that have taken hundreds of millions of years to form.
