Westar income slashed by higher costs

Higher costs associated with its forest products division have slashed earnings for Westar Group, the controlling shareholder of Westar Mining (TSE). Westar reported first-quarter net earnings of $0.4 million, compared with earnings of $2.8 million (1 cents per share) for the same period in 1989.
