Temporary shutdown at Inco’s Garson

All underground mining operations at Inco Ltd.’s Garson mine in Sudbury are being temporarily shut down as a result of the latest unexpected fall of ground on Sept 30.

Garson mine has unique geological structures which have always required additional roof support, says the company. During this year’s 9-week summer shutdown, an extensive program of enhancing existing roof support systems was undertaken and upon start-up, production was curtailed while the program continued.

It has now been decided to suspend production operations until a new mining plan is developed and safe operation can be assured.

The company says the 200 employees affected are being notified that they will be temporarily laid off.
