Four Alberta mines were among the operations awarded the 1996 John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy at the annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy & Petroleum in Vancouver.
The awards were given to operations that recorded the lowest lost-Time injury rates.
The four Alberta operations shared the trophy in the coal category and included Fording Coal’s Genesee operation in Warburg, Manalta Coal’s Vesta mine in Halkirk, and two of Forestburg Collieries’ mines — the Sheerness in Hanna and the Paintearth in Forestburg. Each operation had an injury rate of 0. The Genesee mine was also a winner last year, when it shared the award with New Brunswick Coal.
Other repeat winners include Placer Dome’s Detour Lake mine, which was deemed the safest metal mine in Canada, and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan’s Roncanville division, which was awarded the trophy for the select mine category.
The average lost-Time injury rate of the 1996 trophy winners was 0.53 per 200,000 hours, which represents a 90% improvement over the rate of 20 years ago and a 52% improvement over the rate of 10 years ago.
