The huge Red Dog zinc-lead- silver mine in Alaska of Cominco (TSE), started up about one year ago, is having a major impact. In less than two years, the state’s status has changed from being a non- producer of zinc to a leading producer of the metal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reports that in 1991, Alaska is expected to account for one-half of the U.S. zinc output.
