An investigation into the recent explosion that killed 12 workers at Gold Fields’ Beatrix mine in South Africa has revealed that the operation had inadequate maintenance standards.
The report, performed by the South African Department of Minerals and Energy, calls for special precautions to be taken regarding support ventilation, especially underground fans.
The explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas after an exhaust fan broke down.
Situated 300 km southwest of Johannesburg, Beatrix contributes 500,000 oz. gold annually to Gold Fields. Production was to have resumed at presstime.
