An elementary school in Henderson, Nev., is trying to interest students in mining through construction of the “McCaw School of Mines.”
Funding, materials and manpower are being donated to the 4,649-sq.-ft. project, which is being built on the campus of Gordon McCaw school in the community’s downtown area.
Students will experience a mine tunnel, learn about the geology and history of Nevada, gain hands-on experiences in mineralogy and learn about current mining practices. In addition, a re-circulating stream will provide students with a place to pan for gold.
The school district has about 150,000 students and they, along with students from adjoining districts, will be invited to schedule field trips to the McCaw School of Mines.
