Union suggests resources committee

A mining committee to manage Ontario’s resources is necessary in light of mine closures such as the recently announced shutdown of the Dona Lake gold mine of Placer Dome (TSE) in northwestern Ontario, says United Steelworkers’ Ontario director Harry Hynd.

In letters to Minister of Northern Development and Mines Shelley Martel and Pickle Lake MPP Gilles Pouliot, Hynd said that, besides the direct effect of lost jobs, “the spinoff effect of

the Dona Lake shutdown will be devastating to the community.” Hynd said his union would be eager to work with the provincial government in the formation of such a committee.
