Obituary Alexander Pope

Alexander Pope, a long-time resident of the old silver mining camp of Gowganda and a well- known prospector, died Dec. 31 in Englehart, Ont. He was 100 years old.

He led an active life in the field well into his 90th year. Pope was the oldest surviving member of Colonel MacAlpine’s Dominion Explorers, a group of prospectors and geologists who concentrated on arctic mineral exploration during the late 1920s. Several of his experiences with the natives of the arctic tundra are featured in the book Faces of the Old North (McGraw- Hill Ryerson), by Cathy Wisner.
