The National Research Council has opened a Biotechnology Research Institute in Montreal.
The centre, equipped with pilot plant facilities, will be used to carry out research and development work in biochemical engineering, genetic engineering, protein engineering, cell fusion and immunology geared to meet the needs of industry.
There are several significant opportunities for the application of biotechnology in the mining industry both in the near and long term, including the in situ leaching of uranium ores and the liberation of gold from refractory sulphide ores.
