Placer Development has announced a review of the organization and staffing of its principal office in Vancouver. The review was carried out in recognition of the continuing need for cost effectiveness in the mining industry.
More specifically, the company says, it evaluated changes in the nature and geographic focus of its business and the impact this has on the type and scale of support required from the Vancouver staff.
As a result, 40 positions have been eliminated — five by attrition, 24 by layoff and 11 by retirement. Severance packages, which included cash settlements, and career and financial counselling, have been provided.
The Vancouver office staff now numbers 136 compared to 176 previously. Primarily affected were administration-oriented functions. No reduction is contemplated in the company’s technical capabilities, the company stresses.
