Major Drilling in Mongolia

Major Drilling’s Australian division, Major Pontil, will provide services to Ivanhoe Mines’ Turquoise Hill gold-copper discovery in southern Mongolia.

The job will require at least seven rigs and calls for a minimum of 50,000 metres of diamond drilling initially.

Major Drilling Group also has branches in Canada, the U.S., Europe, Latin America, Indonesia, Turkey, Tanzania and Mongolia.

Cementation Skanska awarded

Engineering and contracting firm Cementation Skanska has received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the international trade category.

The award recognizes Skanska’s having transformed itself from a local U.K.-based company into a global power with revenue of US$16 billion (2001 estimate).

The Queen’s representative, the Lord Lieutenant for South Yorkshire, the Earl of Scarborough, presented the certificate signed by Her Majesty the Queen and U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. The ceremony was held at the company’s headquarters in Doncaster, U.K.

In Timmins, Ont., Cementation Skanska is deepening the Kidd mine’s No.4 shaft an additional 1,906 metres to allow mining at 3,220 metres underground.

Finning makes a deal

Vancouver-based contractor Finning International has sold $33 Million worth of equipment to Albian Sands Energy for use at its Muskeg River mine in the Athabasca Oil sands, near Fort McMurray, Alta.

The contract will deliver 28 pieces of heavy machinery over the next 18 months.

Finning sells, rents, finances and provides customer support services for Caterpillar equipment and engines in western Canada, the U.K. and Chile.
