GSC marks 160 years

April 14 marked the 160th anniversary of the establishment of the Geological Survey of Canada.

Those readers who were student employees in the field and laboratory will hold the GSC in special affection. Moreover, most readers have benefitted, at one time or another, from the steady stream of survey publications and staff presentations at local, regional and national geoscience meetings. Indeed, it is a rare meeting that does not feature the presence of a survey representative.

The survey’s initial role of mapping and interpreting the geology of Canada has expanded into other fields, such as environmental studies, off-shore geology and sustainable development initiatives. That said, it accepts these new demands on its staff and facilities and will continue to serve this country as a major research organization of which all Canadians can be proud.
