The Colorado Geological Survey will host a geoscience conference Oct. 15-16 at the Doubletree Hotel in Durango.
Discussions will focus on land-use planning, recognition and mitigation of geologic hazards, emergency management, water quality, mine remediation and coal bed methane development.
Participants will be invited to visit sites where geologic hazards are known to exist.

PGEs on slate at Manitoba forum
David Peck, senior project geologist with Falconbridge, will head a session on platinum group elements at the Manitoba Mining and Minerals Convention Nov. 15-17 in Winnipeg.
The session will assess the potential for PGE deposits in nickel-sulphide districts and Falconbridge’s exploration strategy in the province.
In addition, Wayne Fraser, director of environment for Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting, will give a talk on mine closures.
The conference is being organized by Manitoba Industry, Trade and Mines.

Big crowds expected at Expomin
More than 43,000 visitors and 2,300 exhibitors attended Expomin in 2000 and even higher numbers are expected for next year’s gathering, slated for May 7-11 in Santiago, Chile.
The trade show attracts equipment manufacturers, service providers, agents, distributors and end-users from throughout the world.
In 2000, the event hosted national pavilions from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Peru, South Africa and the U.S.
The Canadian Association of Mining Equipment & Services for Export (CAMESE) organized a Canada pavilion in 2000, which hosted 76 exhibitors. The association will also participate next year.
