Colorado-based junior Taranis Resources (TRO-V) has intersected a high-grade gold vein about 800 metres northwest of known mineralization at the Kettukuusikko property in northern Finland.
Taranis drilled at the southern end of a magnetic low, intersecting 1.8 metres grading 27.7 grams gold per tonne in altered volcanic rocks. The discovery is on the west side of the Sirkka shear zone, which had been thought to form the western boundary of mineralization on the property.
Drilling by the Geological Survey of Finland had outlined shallow mineralization over a 250-metre strike length on the South Zone at Kettukuusikko, though no resource had been calculated. Drilling earlier this year by Taranis intersected low-grade gold mineralization in a chlorite-quartz-carbonate-pyrite rock.
Eight of the 11 holes drilled on the South Zone cut mineralization over core lengths of 3 to 27 metres, with gold grades typically around 1 to 1.5 grams per tonne. Taranis expects to be able to calculate a resource figure from the new drilling and from re-analysis of old Geological Survey cores.
Mineralization in both zones is hosted by a carbonatized sequence of komatiite and basalt, in structures related to the Sirkka shear.
