Some 220 office, clerical and technical employees at Falconbridge‘s (FL-T) Sudbury operations have turned down the major’s recently tabled contract settlement offer.
The workers, represented by the United Steelworkers of America Local 2020, voted 95% to reject offer, which was aimed at replacing the current deal slated to expire on Feb. 28.
The union says it wants a deal that reflects the current high nickel prices; otherwise its members will strike.
Falco recently inked a new three-year labour pact with 1,050 unionized maintenance and production workers to end a three-week strike at the Sudbury operations.
That deal included limits the use of contract workers, a $2,000 settlement bonus, wage increases, improvements to the pension plan, and a $1,000 bonus if certain production targets are met during the 12-week startup period.
The new deal was passed by 93.5% of those who voted; it runs until Jan. 31, 2007.
Share in Falconbridge were a quarter higher at $33.80 in afternoon trading in Toronto following the news on Feb. 26.
