The Northwest Territories has a new government preparing to enact regulations on mineral resources, Premier R.J. Simpson says in a new video.
The Far North Canadian region is getting ready to streamline processes, improve Indigenous participation and add certainty in a modern set of rules, Simpson said. The territory gained control over mineral rights from the federal government a decade ago. Mining accounts for about 40% of its economy.
“The mineral resource sector is going to be a priority for this government,” Simpson said. “We want to see more development, the public wants to see development and almost every Indigenous government I speak with wants to see development.”
Watch Simpson’s full conversation below with Henry Lazenby, The Northern Miner‘s western editor. It took place at the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia’s Roundup in Vancouver last month.
