U.S. Markets June 19-25

Rising bond yields continued to be a worry on United States equity markets during the trading period June 19-25, pushing the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index down 2.2% to 1,497.74 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.9%.

Weakness was spread across all industries and a much-heralded public offering of (former) private-equity firm Blackstone Group, out at US$31, headed sharply lower the following day. Another coolant was the trouble at investment house Bear Stearns, which took out US$3 billion in loans to bail out two of its hedge funds.

With gold off US$5.25 over the same period, at US$650.75 per oz., the gold equities were softer as well. The Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index fell 2.8% to 136.24, while the unhedged Amex Gold Bugs Index slid 2%. Newmont Mining was down US88 at US$39.13 and Gold Fields US11 to US$16.23, but AngloGold Ashanti took the worst hit of the big boys, sliding US$2.57 to US$38.13.

It was better in the mid-tiers, with Hecla Mining off US8 at US$8.21 and Randgold Resources down US$1.15 at US$21.55. Minas Buenaventura was one of the few golds to post gains, rising US48 to US$36.02, while Harmony Gold Mining rose US28 to US$14.54. DRDGold, which announced it is to receive A$41 million (US$34.7 million) from Emperor Gold Mines’ sale of a 20% stake in the Porgera gold mine to Barrick Gold, was up a penny at US75.

In base metals, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was the most active, with 74 million shares changing hands; it fell US$3.23 to US$44.32. Rio Tinto was down US$5.85 at US$300.40, while BHP Billiton saw a 52-week high of US$60.58 on the way to a close of US$58.90, up US30. Southern Copper also touched a 52-week high: it closed at US$95.44, up US$1.16, having traded as high as US$96.65.

The aluminum giants both lost ground; Alcoa fell US$2.47 to US$39.41, on a volume of 49 million shares. Alcan, which was off US$1.86 at US$81.69, benefited from news that BHP Billiton had hired Merrill Lynch as advisors to assess an Alcan bid, and stories surfaced of an Alcan data room attended by both BHP and Rio Tinto.
