Stock markets in the U. S. advanced during the April 29 -May 5 trading session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 98 points, or 0.8%, to 12970; the Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 11 points, or 0.8%, to 1407; the NASDAQ moved 40 points higher, or 1.6%, to 2464. Precious metals equities were also higher, with the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index moving up 0.7 point, or 0.4%, to 174.5, and the AMEX Gold Bugs index moving up 1.4 points, or 0.3%, to 408.3.
Among volume leaders for the trading session, the most notable was Crystallex International, crashing US95 to close at US72 with 37 million shares changing hands, after the ministry of the environment in Venezuela has decided not to grant Crystallex an environmental permit for its Las Cristinas gold project. Rio de Janeiro-based miner Vale added US$2.29 to US$40.31 on 115 million shares. Fellow mining giant Rio Tinto added US$11.65 to US$503.60 on 1.4 million shares. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan added US39 to US$193.89 on 75 million shares, while potash miner Mosaic rose US$1.11 to US$124.79 on 38 million shares.
Barrick Gold, the world’s largest gold miner, lost US13 to US$38.91 on 57 million shares, while fellow gold miner Goldcorp added US58 to US$36.68 on 43 million shares, and Newmont advanced US$1.36 to US$45.35 on 38 million shares. Another gold mover was Agnico-Eagle Mines, climbing US$2.95 to US$63.97 on 12.5 million shares.
Silver miner Coeur d’Alene lost a penny to US$3.16 on 64 million shares. Fellow silver miner Apex Silver fell US$1.01 to US$9.38 on 2.4 million shares. Aluminum giant Alcoa moved US$1.32 higher to US$36.89 on 56 million shares. Copper miner Freeport Mc-MoRan rose US19 to US$115.99 on 55 million shares.
Other notable movers include iron junior Cardero Resources, adding 36% to US$2.50 on 654,000 shares. Copper junior QuaterraResources rose 18% to US$3.55 on 102,000 shares. Gold Reserve dropped 43% to US$2.19 on 9.5 million shares after the ministry of the environment in Venezuela has announced that is was planning to rescind a permit for its Brisas project.
