TSX Venture Exchange, Oct. 28 – Nov. 1

The S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index took a breather during the trading sessions after posting big gains over the past three weeks, with falling commodity prices contributing to decrease of 1.9%, or 18.25 points, en route to a 955.33-point weekly close. Markets are awaiting a firm policy statement from the U.S. Federal Reserve in regards to upcoming stimulus initiatives, while the Canadian economy posted better-than-expected growth in August, with a 0.3% expansion.

Gold futures lost ground for the first time in three weeks, with December contracts for bullion dropping 2.6%, or US$34.80, before closing out the trading period at US$1,315.90 per oz. Crude oil futures couldn’t muster positive momentum, as December contracts for West Texas Intermediate lost 3.3%, or US$3.26 during the week, en route to a US$94.61-per-barrel close. December contracts for copper gained US3.1¢  before closing at US$3.30 per lb.

Kelowna-based junior Diamcor Mining rode momentum after selling a 91.65-carat octahedron diamond unearthed from its Krone–Endora at Venetia mine in South Africa’s Limpopo province. The company jumped 17¢ during weekly trading, en route to a $1.76-per-share close.

The gem-quality octahedron diamond netted US$818,000 in proceeds, and was part of a diamond tender totalling 2,654.63 carats that generated US$1.15 million for Diamcor. Most of the rough diamonds sold were recovered during testing and commissioning on Krone–Endora’s lower-grade, upper-zone material. The company reported that the value per carat achieved from its diamond tender was well above expectations.

Colombia-focused producer Pacific Coal Resources jumped 12¢ on 123,430 shares traded after selling its interest in the Barranquilla port concession, which is on the banks of the Magdalena River, 5 km upstream from the Caribbean Sea. The company closed the week at 50¢ per share.

Junior silver producer Aurcana lost 27¢ on 524,957 shares traded during the week before closing at $1.86 per share. On Nov. 1, the company announced it had applied to amend terms of 5.5 million outstanding purchase warrants, which were issued as part of a private placement in December 2010.

The warrants are scheduled to expire in early December, and Aurcana intends to reduce the exercise price from $3.28 per share to $2.04 per share, as well as extend the expiry date to December 2014. Under terms of the warrant amendment, if Aurcana’s closing price exceeds $2.45 per share for 10 consecutive days, the company must decrease the warrant exercise term by 30 days.
