TSX Venture Exchange Sept. 25-Oct. 1

The S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index climbed 71.27 points to 2,872.66 over the Sept. 24-Oct. 1 trading session. Average daily trading volume decreased to 85.3 millions shares.

The board’s point gain contrasted with the number of companies reaching new highs and lows. On the junior board, 66 juniors sunk to new lows over the period, while only 26 reached new highs.

VMS Ventures was a volume leader, trading 45.6 million shares over the week to close up 90% at 74. The stock was halted again on Oct. 2, pending further news about the company’s volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization discovery at Reed Lake in Manitoba.

Constantine Metal Resources also posted significant gains over the week. After the company released partial results from one drill hole from the Palmer project, a polymetallic massive sulphide target near Haines, Alaska, the stock saw a 27 or 77% increase to close at 62. A 14-metre section graded 3.8% copper, 7.2% zinc, 0.37 gram gold per tonne, and 47 grams silver.

Continuing a climb that started in mid-August, stock in Arizona Star Resource rose $1.50 over the week to close at $14 per share. The company owns 51% of the Cerro Casale deposit in Chile, which it is moving towards development with 49%-owner Kinross Gold.

Without posting any news, Anglo Minerals climbed 87 or 30% to close the session at $3.77 per share. Similarly, Mansfield Minerals rose 62 to close at $4.25.

Noront Resources was another volume leader, with 47.5 million shares trading hands over the session. Despite the volume, Noront’s share price remained unchanged at $3.60 apiece. Junior explorers with land claims around Noront’s Double Eagle discovery continued to dominate the volume leaders. MacDonald Mines Exploration remained volume leader with 67.4 million shares traded; its share price continued to decline from the Double Eagle-prompted spike in mid-September, closing down 5 at 26.5. Spider Resources, KWG Resources and Freewest Resources all traded high volume with little share price change.

Since spiking to $1.15 in mid-July, Christopher James Gold has been in steady decline. The trend continued to the end of September, with the stock posting a 16 loss to close the session at 28 on average trading volume of 560,000 shares.

Salazar Resources also slipped, closing down 45 at $3.20 per share. Latin American Minerals also lost ground, its share price dropping 14.5 to 45.5.
