TSX Venture Exchange Oct. 31-Nov. 6

A more than US$20 jump in spot gold to around US$626 per oz. gave the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index a boost over the Oct. 31-Nov. 6 trading session; it closed up 3.7%, or 94.22 points, at 2,653.95. Average daily trading volumes continued to be strong, rising to 75 million shares.

The gap between junior board gainers and losers narrowed, with 32 explorers touching new 52-week highs over the week while 40 slipped to yearly lows.

Strateco Resources again came in as most-active trader with 27.8 million shares of volume and a gain of 33%, closing up 45 at $1.80 per share. Investors were happy with a recent 5.6-metre drill intercept averaging 1.68% U3O8 from the company’s Matoush project in northern Quebec’s Otish Mountain region. Spot uranium prices remain at the record-high level of US$60 per lb. on supply concerns.

Also continuing to reap benefits from the uranium rally, shares in UrAsia Energy gained 10%, or 32, to close at $3.49 apiece on volume of 12.7 million. The company produces U3O8 from its Akdala mine in Kazakhstan.

Shares of Plexmar Resources slipped 24% on the week, falling 22 to 70 apiece on volume of 11.6 million. An airborne geophysics survey was recently completed on the company’s Bolsa del Diablo project in northern Peru, where recent channel sampling of veins returned further high-grade gold values.

Skeena Resources continued to bear the market’s wrath, closing the session down 13, or 22%, at 45 per share on volume of almost 7.6 million shares. Recent drill results from its El Corazon project in northern Ecuador did not meet investors’ expectations.

After closing its acquisition of the Pardee uranium project near Elliot Lake in northern Ontario, Pele Mountain Resources saw its stock gain 85%, or 17, to close at 37 per share on strong volume of 7.3 million. The project hosts a major portion of Rio Algom’s historic resource estimate of about 28 million contained pounds U3O8.

Blue Note Mining shares got a 20% lift on plans to reopen the Caribou and Restigouche zinc-lead mines in northern New Brunswick, closing up 7 at 42 per share on volume of 6.8 million shares.

With volume of 6 million shares, Yukon Zinc saw a 25% gain to close the week up 7.5 at 37.5. Strengthening zinc prices stimulated renewed investor interest in the company and its Wolverine project in the Yukon.

Gold Reach Resources closed up 4.5 at 22 per share on volume of almost 5.8 million. Drilling at its Seel project in northern B.C. returned 138 metres of 0.85% copper and 23 grams silver per tonne, including a 42-metre section of 1.24% copper and 32 grams silver.

Trade Winds Ventures gave back some recent gains, closing down 10.5 at 39.5 per share on volume of 4.5 million. A gold resource estimate was recently tabled for the M zone at its Detour Lake Block A property, a joint venture with Pelangio Mines.
