TSX Venture Exchange March 28-April 3

Trading activity on the TSX Venture Exchange over the March 28-April 3 report period was propelled by bargain-hunters and profit-takers, with higher-valued companies tending to lose ground to their lower-priced peers. The overall trend was up, thanks to strong prices for both precious and base metals, with the TSX Venture Composite Index up 169.29 points to close at 2,939.85 over the session.

The 10 most-active resource stocks all made gains, but with one exception, all were priced below a dollar, and almost half were below 50. Plans to explore some Quebec uranium properties helped top-trader Antoro Resources gain 4 to close at 13. The Montreal-based junior also holds other projects in Quebec and Ontario, including a diamond joint venture in the James Bay Lowlands.

Uranium was also the magic word for Frontier Pacific Mining, which gained 4 to close at 62, taking second place on the most-active list. The company and partner Solex Resources are preparing to drill the Sayana prospect at the Macusani uranium project in southern Peru.

Shares in Red Lake Resources more than doubled in price, up 13 to 26.5, after the company announced an option to earn 100% of the Bolshoi silver property in the Zacatecas region of central Mexico. Days earlier, the company inked a deal to option a silver property in Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene district. These recent deals reflect a corporate decision to focus on silver projects, now that the metal sells for about US$11 per oz.

High zinc prices kept Yukon Zinc on the most-active list for yet another week, and up another nickel at 69. The company is looking to develop the Wolverine zinc mine, which would also produce copper, gold and silver, in the Yukon.

Junior companies with significant advanced projects (and share prices that reflect the appreciated value of their projects) came under downward pressure as savvy investors took profits. Bear Creek Mining, which has enjoyed continued exploration success at the Corani silver-gold project in Peru, slipped 45 to $5.80.

High-flyer Palmarejo Silver and Gold lost 30 to close at $10.00 over the session, a modest loss given that the company’s shares traded at $3.00 just six months ago. The company is exploring and developing its namesake gold-silver project in Mexico’s Sierra Madre mineral belt.

Nevada-focused companies bucked the downtrend, with Coral Gold ahead $2.05 to $6.30, Tone Resources up 61 at $2.20, and White Knight Resources up 60 to close at $2.55. All three companies share the distinction of being coveted by financier Robert McEwen, who is attempting to build a Nevada exploration giant that would hold one of the largest land packages in the mineral-rich state.

On the iron ore front, Consolidated Thompson-Lundmark Gold Mines was up $1.02 to $2.95. The company aims to develop the Bloom Lake iron deposit near the Mount-Wright iron-mining operation of Quebec Cartier Mining.
