A modest slip in the bullion price prompted the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index to close out the June 19-25 trading session on an off note, down 36.29 points at 3,189.89. Average daily trading volumes were also lower, at 67.5 million shares.
The market saw the bearish trend relax somewhat for the week, with 40 junior explorers seeing new 52-week highs versus 55 that touched new annual lows.
Northern Abitibi Mining was the top trader for the session, closing two pennies lower at 28 per share on volume of more than 13 million shares. The company recently wrapped up the first phase of fieldwork at its Taylor Brook polymetallic project in Newfoundland.
Trading in Romarco Minerals soared over the week with volume of more than 10 million shares; the stock saw an 8.5 gain to close at 33.5 per share. Last month, the company announced it is purchasing Kinross Gold’s Haile gold deposit, in South Carolina.
With 10 million shares changing hands on the session, Goldcrest Resources was again a volume leader, although the stock moved in the wrong direction, shedding 6 to close at 91 per share. Drilling on the company’s Gaoua project, in Burkina Faso, turned in more copper-gold results while shareholders OK’d the sale of the Youanmi gold project, in Western Australia, to Apex Minerals for A$10 million.
Sage Gold traded 8.7 million shares, closing down 1.5 at 14.5 per share for the week. A recent 8.5-metre intercept of 0.95% nickel and 1.16% copper from its Jacobus project, near Beardmore, in northwestern Ontario, continued to captivate investors.
Northwestern Mineral Ventures continued as a strong trader on the recent news of its joint venture with UraMin to form a new company holding uranium projects in Niger. Shares of the junior were off two pennies at $1.05 apiece on volume of over 7.8 million.
Indonesian-focused copper-gold explorer Southern Arc Minerals posted a 45% gain on the week, closing up 75 at $2.40 per share on trading volume of 5.9 million shares. Recent drilling on its Selodong project has returned wide copper-gold intervals.
Serengeti Resources saw a new high during the session, touching $4.80 per share before closing at $4.25, a gain of 77 on trading volume of a million shares. With a $20-million financing under its belt, the company is awaiting assays from 11 holes on its Kwanika copper-gold porphyry project in central B.C.’s Quesnel Trough.
High-grade zinc intervals from drilling on its 40 Mile project, in eastern Alaska, pushed Full Metal Minerals to a 28% gain, closing up 62 at $2.83 per share on volume of 2.2 million shares. A 44.6-metre intersection on the LWM prospect averaged 15.9% zinc, 4.5% lead and 76.6 grams silver in massive sulphides.
Shares of Gulfside Minerals rocketed 88% on news of the planned acquisition of a significant coal deposit in southwestern Mongolia, gaining 53 to close at $1.13 on trading volume of almost 2.4 million.
